Vintage Pentax photo equipment – Pentax SMC Takumar 55mm f2 lens

The 55mm f2 lens was the standard lens sold with most package deals on Pentax cameras in the early 70’s and 80’s. The lens was well built with strong metal construction unlike many of the more fragile lenses sold with current day DSLR packages (I’m a bit cynical :-))

Pentax used an M42 screw mount on their early single lens reflex camera bodies and, although Pentax didn’t invent the M42 standard mounting specifications that they used, the M42 was often referred to simply as the Pentax mount because they were such a dominant player in the early days of single lens reflex cameras in the North American market. The thread itself is a 42mm diameter thread with a 1 mm pitch. In later years, Pentax switched to a different mounting system referred to as the Pentax K mount. The lens displayed is the K-mount version of the standard lens.
