New England Trip 2012 – Day 2 – SUNY Canton

Our first day on the road was a short one and we stayed the night at the Stonefence Resort outside of Ogdensburg.  At this time of the year, finding a place to stay is pretty easy since families with school-aged children aren’t normally vacationing.   In fact, at this time of the year, our car usually finds it pretty lonely in the parking lot and we generally have the restaurant all to our selves or need to share with only a limited number of other guests.  Certainly no line-ups! 🙂

New England trip 2012 – Day 1 – Ogdensburg, NY

Our original plan for this period of time was to fly to Vancouver and then borrow my brother’s car for a trip along the west coast down to the Los Angeles area. We changed or minds when we looked at the long range forecast for our intended route. It looked like we might encounter three or four days of nasty weather along the west coast, so we decided instead to visit the New England states and enjoy the many colours of the Fall foliage.

We planned on leaving early in the morning and traveling straight south but, one thing led to another and we ended up leaving rather late in the day so our first day of travel was a rather short one and we arrived in Ogdensburg, NY  just in time to enjoy the evening light along the banks of the St. Lawrence River.

Land Battle Re-enactment of the French and Indian War at Ogdensburg – July 22, 2012

Each July the folks of Ogdensburg, New York turn the clock back a few hundred years on a piece of open land at Lighthouse Point on the banks of the St. Lawrence River in order to welcome re-enactors interested in the skirmishes that occurred in the 18th century when this piece of property was the site of Fort de la Presentation. They are hoping that some day they will have been able to raise sufficient funds to begin a reconstruction of the fort itself as a tourist site of historical and educational interest. More information about Fort de la Presentation is here.

As the beginning of the land battle draws closer, cannons roll in, the drummers start drumming and the troops assemble in period clothing ready to do battle. Lots of noise and smoke as the black powder artillery adds to the drama of the re-enactment.

The Encampment at the Re-enactment of French and Indian War at Ogdensburg, NY July 22th, 2012

After the water battle drew to a close, I had some time available to wander among the many tents of the encampment to say hello to some of the reenactors whom I had met in previous years. It’s a fun time for me as I try to find a few more scenes or items to photograph that  one would not normally encounter in present-day life.

Water Battle Re-enactment of French and Indian War at Ogdensburg, NY July 22th, 2012

Always interesting to see the various boats and bateaux plying the waters off the lighthouse point.

(Tech: This year my water shots were taken with a 300mm lens with 1.7x on a DX format camera body but without remote release this time around. This introduced some shutter depression movement compared to shots from previous years. Hopefully everyone will enjoy seeing them anyway. :-)) Read more…

July 24th, 2011: Land Battle Re-enactment of French and Indian War at Ogdensburg, NY

For this event I have broken the activity into two sections. This post covers the land battle portion. If interested in our other postings of the July 24th, 2011 Ogdensburg water battle re-enactment, please see:

Water Battle Re-enactment of French and Indian War at Ogdensburg, NY July 24th, 2011

This is the third year that Graeme and I have traveled to Ogdensburg, NY to photograph the various re-enactments. Our Previous postings of these events can be found at:
July 2009 – Plains of Abraham re-enactment
July 2010 – 250th anniversary of the French and Indian Wars. (WATER BATTLE)
July 2010 – 250th anniversary of the French and Indian Wars. (LAND BATTLE)

Last year’s event marked the 250th anniversary and was very well attended both by participants and by attendants. This year’s, attendance was somewhat lower but, as the re-enactment began, a good number of spectators found comfortable viewing positions to watch the events unfolding before them.

On previous occasions we had traveled to Ogdensburg for the Saturday events. For 2011, we decided to do the Sunday event. As in the previous year’s blog, the photos of the 2011 event will be uploaded as two blog entries, one focused on the water battle and the other focused on the land battle. This blog entry covers the water battle re-enactment. You will find the land battle photos, etc. here: Land Battle Re-Enactment of the French and Indian War at Ogdensburg, NY – July 24th, 2011

Many of the participants in these re-enactments sleep out overnight in their basic white tents and cook their meals over open wood fires. It’s part of the true-to-history aspect and part of the fun and adventure although not far from the amenities of civilization.

I arrived back from Italy on Saturday night and on Sunday joined with Graeme and others for a trip to Ogdensburg, NY to photograph the second day of the annual re-enactment activities. I will be continuing to post more images from my Italian trip photos first before working on the Ogdensburg photos.  Likewise, Graeme has some other projects that have priority, but we will get around to posting images from Ogdensburg sooner rather than later :-).  For a glimpse at the images from the re-enactments of the past two years please take a look at: Ogdensburg, NY.

Ogdensburg Founder’s Day Reenactment 2010 – Battle of the Thousand Islands 250th Anniversary Commemoration, Fort de la Présentation, Ogdensburg, New York State (Land battle re-enactment)

July 17th, 2010 – Traveled across the St. Lawrence River to Ogdensburg, NY in the United States to watch the Battle of the Thousand Islands 250th Anniversary Commemoration re-enactment activities at Fort de la Présentation site in Ogdensburg, New York. Amazing number of tents and re-enactors were present in full costume and gear depicting this period of warfare in the 1760’s known as the French and Indian War.

Due to the large number of photos relating to this re-enactment, I’ve broken posting of this event into two parts. A water battle re-enactment in the previous post and then the photos of the land battle re-enactment in this post.

From Wiki: The French and Indian War is the common U.S. name for the war between Great Britain and France in North America from 1754 to 1763. In 1756 the war erupted into the world-wide conflict known as the Seven Years’ War and thus came to be regarded as the North American theater of that war. In Canada, it is usually just referred to as the Seven Years’ War, although French speakers in Quebec often call it La guerre de la Conquête (“The War of Conquest”). In Europe, there is no specific name for the North American part of the war. The name refers to the two main enemies of the British colonists: the royal French forces and the various Native American forces allied with them. Although it is not often mentioned, some factions of the Native American communities provided support to British efforts but the primary Native American alliances were with the French forces during most significant skirmishes during this period of conflict.
