Punta Cana, Dominican Republic – February 2013

February 20th, 2013 1 comment

Graeme and I holidayed in Punta Cana in December 2009 (2009 Dominican Republic blog entries)

This time around, it was my wife and I who were hoping to enjoy a bit of warmth and sunshine away from Ottawa’s snow-covered landscape. To travel south from Ottawa, we need to find a tour departing directly from Ottawa or else, as an alternative we drive to Montreal or Toronto to get alight from either of those two travel hubs. On this occasion, we found a Sunwing tour departing from Montreal that fit our schedule. Our flight was scheduled to leave from P. E. Trudeau airport at 9AM so, once we factored in the required three hours for check-in and the 2.5hr drive from home to airport, we decided to drive down to Montreal the day before our flight departure date and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express where for a relatively small extra fee we could park our car until our return from Punta Cana.

The drive from Ottawa to Montreal would normally be uneventful. Not this time, though. High winds and falling/drifting snow reduced visibility in some places to close to zero and added a bit of extra excitement of our trip.

Commerce and trade with Cuba – my observations on the future of this island nation.

Educationally, I hold an MBA degree in Finance and Marketing. I’m retired from the normal working world. Now, I carry a camera around with me and use it to record what I see. As I do so, my educational background has an impact on how I spend some of my vacation time and also, from time to time, influences where I point my camera.

What impact did my educational background have on my vacation activities during my recent visit to Cuba? Read more…

Varadero, Cuba – Flora and Fauna

During our visit to Varadero, Cuba I didn’t see all of the species of birds, reptiles and plants that were there and photographed even fewer species. Many of the species have been included in other blog entries as part of the day’s story. Others didn’t fit elsewhere. This blog entry will serve as a collection point of images of the various species that I photographed. Where I have included the image in another blog, clicking on the image will take you to that blog entry.

Varadero, Cuba – Heading home

Our pick-up for the flight home was scheduled for pretty early in the morning so we were up before sunrise. We were supposed to have a wake-up call, breakfast delivered to our room and porter service to get our bags from our room to the pick-up point. Somehow we ended up with none of the above services so somewhere along the way the time or the room number got mixed up. Perhaps someone else got a knock on their door at 6AM and had an unexpected breakfast in bed or …??? Anyway, we were up in time and waiting when the bus arrived to take us to the airport. Read more…

Nightly Stage Show – Barcelo Marina Palace – Varadera, Cuba

Each night, the resort’s auditorium was filled to capacity for the nightly stage show. We had gone to a few of them and this particular evening I was outside the building taking some night shots when I decided to head over to the stage area to see if I might be able to catch the last of the evening’s performance. Looking out over the Barcelo Premium Marina Palace Resort – Varadero, Cuba

It felt like a great day for a bit of a climb so I took my Nikon D300 and my 10.5mm fisheye lens up to the top of the look-out tower and enjoyed the view and the photo opportunities. The above image shows the Music Room (Disco) mid left, the marina construction top  center, and the main reception area top right. Read more…
